Located near Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art in Hannam-dong, Seoul, ‘mtl’ houses select store ‘more than less’ and café bonanza coffee. There are countless stores and cafés that scattered around Itaewon indeed but discerning caffeine aficionados head here for bonanza coffee, an import from Berlin that was born in 2006.
Pushing the door open through the minimal, red brick building the sophisticated mixture — of aroma of the specialty coffee, different shades of green, and the sound of music — instantly lift the mood. Inside it is modern yet natural where fresh plants, not-too-heavy fashion and lifestyle goods coexist in harmony. On the right, a lengthy coffee bar stretches under a high ceiling, the highlight of this space. Behind the counter the half-grey, half-green tiled wall mounted with a neon sign scribbled with bonanza coffee heroes, has already become a favorite photo spot on SNS There is a small space on the side for DJing, filling the space with music and appealing to eyes at the same time.
The selection at the store ‘more than less’ are minimal and well-edited. There are magazines (Magazine B, Monocle and bear), coffee table books and stationery. Lifestyle goods with playful designs including candles and coffee mugs are on display. Casual clothing and accessories such as bags and totes appeal to younger customers.
After a stroll around Itaewon’s hot spots, take a seat near the window at mtl and enjoy a leisurely sip of bonanza coffee basking in the warm glow of the sun. Recommended is piccolo latte, a strong caffe latte that blends slightly sour roast and silky milk. On the basement is Maybell Bakery whose bread sell out faster than they bake.
