Have you heard of a brand Tchai Kim, which brought sensation through daily-wear Hanbok? Tchai Kim is a fashionable and modern ready-to-wear Hanbok brand with a free-spirited and nomadic sensibility that takes its inspirations from Namsadangpae, a traveling troupe of performers of the olden days. Tchai Kim’s clothes are made from pure, natural fabrics such as linen, cotton and silk that offer comfort. Another attractiveness about Tchai Kim is the mix of these ‘traditional’ fabrics with modern materials that adds a note of originality to its style. Tchai Kim goes beyond the boundaries of traditional design to create clothes that blend in beautifully with modern ready-to-wear.
The items that represent Tchai Kim are the ‘cheolik’ dress, the ‘dapho’ coat, the ‘daegeumhyung’ jacket, the ‘jeogori’ jacket of the Kim family of the Yeonan region, the ‘jeogori’ jacket of the Kim family of the Suncheon region and the ‘baenet jeogori’ inspired by the traditional bowless jacket for newborns. These reinterpreted clothes are as glamorous and practical as western style dresses.
Tchai Kim features formality of traditional Hanbok, yet boasts comfort, and now the brand can be found in a number of trendy locations in Seoul. Hannam-Dong atelier is the design workshop and showroom that exhibits bespoke Hanbok. Samcheong Boutique is the headquarter of ‘Traveling Store that Contemplates the World’ (Tchai Kim Pop-Up Store). And there is Yeonhui Boutique with mixed atmosphere of nostalgic mood and young hipster energy.
